Counting Tens and Ones

Today in math we began to explore the concept of tens and ones. The students used marshmallows with small straws to hold 10 cheerios as tens, and individual cheerios as ones. We practiced demonstrating lots of 2 digit numbers as tens and ones during this fun lesson! The kids had a great time and got a good handle on the concept as well. It was a great lesson to end our fabulous first week!

Using Our Senses and Science Tools

This week we have been studying about the various science tools that we will be using this year in science. We conducted Investigation Stations today using our science tools and 4 of our senses. We discussed how it was not safe to use the sense of taste in science when we do not know the substances we are working with! The kids were given 2 similar substances and had to use the senses of touching, smelling, hearing, and seeing to determine if the substances were the same or different. They learned that the safe way to smell in science is to waft the smell towards their noses. There was some terrific discussion among the groups trying to explain to their other members what they discovered! Check out the slides for each class to see the budding scientists in action!
